What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Contact forms
Every time the contact form on our website is used, the submission data is recorded by the form builder plugin and stored in the website’s database. This data includes your name, email address and possibly your telephone number, if you chose to provide it. This data is stored purely for our own use, should we need to contact you again in the future. It will not be shared, sold or made available to anyone else under any circumstances.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer to help the site provide a better user experience. In general, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like shopping baskets, and provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications like Google Analytics. As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better.
If you wish to disable or block the use of cookies entirely, you can do so by activating that setting in your web browser. In most browsers, this is known as using its private browsing or “incognito” mode. For further help with this, you can take a look at the Help menu of your browser or visit the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers.
Our website uses cookies to distinguish you from other users on our website. This helps us to keep track of how our website is used, so that we can be better informed to make changes and improvements in the future. By continuing to use our website, you are agreeing to our use of cookies.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Analytics
Our website uses Google Analytics which also stores cookies on your computer. These cookies allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our website when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way the website works, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for.
Who we share your data with
We value your privacy and will not share, sell or make available any data you provide.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have submitted data using our contact form or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
